It has been a special day here at the “Royal School for the Blind.” We have had some very special visitors from Singapore.
Dr Chong Suet Ling (Lead specialist, Special Education Branch, Ministry of Education Singapore), Ms Teo Pek Wan (Senior Assistant Director, NCSS) and Mr Chua Yew Sein Michael (Special Education Officer, SE Branch, Ministry of Education, Singapore).
Our visitors were on a fact finding mission to gain further insights into the education of Children and Young People who have a Visual Impairment. A tour of our school was arranged with our Head of School Mr Paul Boulton and our chief Executive Mr J Byrne and our visitors were clearly attentive to the detail of the activities seen, resources being used and the facilities we are so proud of.
Our visitors were very interested to find out about our curriculum, accreditation, resources, accommodation, assistive technology, Vocational studies and school-life-planning for students with varying levels of need.
A special assembly was held where each class shared one thing they had learnt about Singapore this week. Our favourite fact was the coke machine at the university that dispenses free coke if you give it a hug !
Our visitors had a surprise for us though and presented Mr Boulton and Mr Byrne with gifts for the school.
They included a book about Special Education in Singapore, a beautiful coaster made by adults with learning disabilities in Singapore and special packs for our classes and residential units.
